Before I post the vigil story, I wanted to include an excerpt of the note Stacy’s Aunt Candace asked pastor Neil Schori to read to attendees as there wasn’t room to include it in the story and that section of video footage isn’t working properly. The note is a letter to Stacy (any typos are mine from the transcription):

“I miss you deeply and I cannot express the grief and pain I feel. Your life spoke volumes to many more than you will ever know. I believe your life will continue to speak and bring healing to many. You were a gift to us and you continue to give to many because of your inspiration to us all. I believe your light will never be snuffed out. You touched so many lives because you noticed and loved people, even though you were hurting so much inside. I know you’re in heaven with our lord Jesus Christ and that you do not live in silent pain anymore. You will never be forgotten and you will remain in our hearts forever. No one can take that from us. Your legacy will live on. I know I will see you again some day and that gives me strength to carry on. I believe we will have closure and justice to bring you home. -With all my love, Aunt Candy”

Reporter’s Notebook: One-year vigil

October 28, 2008 gatehousechicago Comments off

Hey everyone,

I just returned from the vigil after spending extra time chatting with folks about some new search technology that’s going to be used in local and national missing persons cases. We’ll have more on that later, once we get a chance to see the technology in action.

Turnout (probably 70-90) was pretty good considering the weather and length of time that has passed. Everybody seemed as upbeat as possible and they seem confident they’ll get some answers soon. I’ll have a story up later and hopefully a video if the footage turned out. It was very dark and the only light was from the cameras of the TV crews, so we’ll see how it goes.

‘Gone but not forgotten,’ supporters mark one year anniversary

With the weight of a year hanging upon them, friends, family and supporters of Stacy Peterson and Kathleen Savio gathered in Bolingbrook Tuesday night to remember the two women.

Led by women carrying a “Gone but not forgotten” banner, nearly 100 people marched the short distance from Savio’s home on Pheasant Chase Drive to Peterson’s home on Pheasant Chase Court. Each held a candle in honor of Peterson who disappeared exactly one year ago at the age of 23, and of Savio, 40, who was found murdered in her home in March 2004.

“These two women have had a tremendous impact on our lives,” Rev. Neil Schori said. “Stacy and Kathleen are not forgotten.”

Both women were the wives of former Bolingbrook police sergeant Drew Peterson, 54, who is the sole suspect in his wife’s disappearance, which police have labeled a ‘potential homicide.’ Shortly after Stacy Peterson went missing, authorities announced they were taking another look at Savio’s death, which had been ruled an accidental drowning. In February, an independent pathologist ruled the drowning a homicide. Police have not named a suspect.

Schori made headlines in December when he told Fox News host Greta Van Susteren that Stacy Peterson confided in him that her husband had admitted to killing his third wife, Savio.

Early Tuesday morning, Peterson appeared on the Today Show with Matt Lauer and maintained his innocence in both cases. He said he still believes his wife left him for another man and asked her, “Show yourself. Put an end to this nightmare.” In a release Tuesday, Peterson said he would not attend the vigil, choosing instead to spend time with his family.

“There is not a single day that goes by that I don’t think about Stacy, so to me Tuesday is just another day of her being away,” Peterson said.

But Tuesday was not just another day for the friends and family, including Peterson’s neighbor Sharon Bychowski, gathered in Bolingbrook, who said both women lived in fear of their husband.

“That day that Drew dragged me over to his house to tell me that she had left her children behind, there was no doubt in my mind that Stacy would never do that,” Bychowski said. “And 112 percent of me walked out that door knowing what had happened to her and that she was not coming back.”

Savio’s nephew Charlie Doman chastised authorities for failing to respond to his aunt’s pleas for help in the months before her murder. Doman said Savio documented her allegations of abuse and harassment from Peterson, and occasionally from his new teenage bride, Stacy.

“If my aunt hadn’t been murdered and Stacy went missing, even though they didn’t see eye-to-eye, my aunt would be right here with us, helping right now. The Savio family is here and we will always be here to help find Stacy, no matter what,” Doman said. “My aunt was a very strong and stubborn woman. Even from the grave, she’s still helping solve her own murder.”

Here’s a new thread for Tuesday. Below, we’ve copied the statement Drew released through his publicist Glenn Selig, on the one-year anniversary of Stacy’s disappearance.

(PRNewsChannel) / Bolingbrook, Ill. and New York, N.Y. / Responding to reporters’ inquiries seeking comment on the one year anniversary of Stacy Peterson’s disappearance, Drew Peterson released the following statement: “There is not a single day that goes by that I don’t think about Stacy, so to me Tuesday is just another day of her being away. I realize this may be a significant event for the media, but it is not for me or my family. I won’t be participating in any vigils. Instead, I am giving one interview and then I will be far from the media spotlight spending quality time with my kids who need their dad now more than ever.

“For those who are concerned about my children, I thank you. But there’s no need for worry. I am taking good care of them though I have to admit acting as both dad and mom takes a lot of work and patience. My son Thomas is first in his class at one of the largest and finest high schools in Illinois. His brother Chris is also doing exceptionally well in school and is involved in wrestling and other activities. My youngest kids, Anthony and Lacy are too young to be in school but both are happy and healthy and adjusting normally.

“I have consistently and steadfastly maintained that I had nothing to do with Stacy’s disappearance and the death of Kathy Savio, my third wife. I hope that Stacy returns home or reveals herself, and that I am one day cleared of any wrongdoing in both cases. Until then, I remain strong thanks in no small part to my family and especially my kids who believe in their dad.”

Media Note: Drew Peterson is not available for further comment. He is scheduled to make only one media appearance on Tuesday on NBC’s Today show with Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira.

UPDATE: Exactly one year after his wife Stacy disappeared, Drew Peterson gave his only media interview regarding the anniversary to Matt Lauer of NBC’s Today Show. Peterson said he still believes his wife is alive and that she left him for another man. Near the end of the interview, Lauer asked Peterson what he would say to his wife if she were listening. Peterson replied, “Show yourself. Put an end to this nightmare.”

One year later, family still searching for closure

October 27, 2008 gatehousechicago Comments off

As the one-year anniversary of Stacy Peterson’s disappearance nears, a mountain of failing hope and fruitless efforts dwarf the hill of optimism that once surrounded her friends and family.

It’s a milestone with no merit. A tacit cue that closure should begin, where no closure is in sight.

“It’s like walking up to a ghost,” said Sharon Bychowski, Peterson’s friend and neighbor. “You’re walking up to something but there’s nothing there. There’s no closure.”
