Your Thread – December 19

Here’s Friday’s thread everyone. I won’t be able to check in on the blog much in the next few days so if the thread starts loading slowly, please e-mail me at dhooker@mysuburbanlife.com so I know to start a new thread. Otherwise, have a great weekend and, for those of you in Chicagoland, stay safe throughout this storm.

  1. (initially posted to wrong thread – sorry)
coffeeoccity here, but on vacation 😉

Stinky tho’ the whole ‘engagement’ (I think of it as an ‘en-GAG-ment’) story is, I have to give some props to the men in Ms. Raines’ family: for one, they’re physically present and, sad to say, that is more than a lot of 23 year old women can say. Second, her father has gone both to Peterson personally and the press in what look like sincere attempts to keep her safe. Again, more support than many have.
My only worry is – will he really keep it up? If the story that she & her dad have known DP for years & are friendly is accurate, I wonder. I hope.

  2. Once again I worry about the children. This girl is 23 or 24 (depending on the news reports). She is an adult and is entitled to make dumb decisions.

However, I worry about Drew’s kids having someone else come into their lives on such a whim that it seems more like “Hey kids – Daddy got you a new mommy for Christmas!”. I worry about this girl’s kids because this could mean that they are suddenly thrown into an environment with the media hounding their mom and everything about her.

I will say that the media has been very good at staying away from Drew’s kids except for when they are in his home and they are camped outside of the house which certainly inhibits their ability to play outside like they otherwise probably would have.

One report says that her children are 4 and 5 years old. I imagine that at her age with two children that finances would be kind of tight. I had a really bad thought – I hope that the engagement doesn’t mean that she is expecting like it did when Drew and Stacy got engaged.

  3. If I were this womens parents, I would seriously consider getting one of those GPS chips planted in a secret location in her body, like they do for pets now. Her odds of becoming another “missing person” are VERY high.

  4. Hi Facs.

I was wondering what it must be like for a suspect’s attorney and PR agent to read stories of a young woman’s father and other family members expressing their outrage that she’s engaged to their client, yet, dutifully and timely putting out press releases about the “happy” occasion?

I thought a PR agent is supposed to rehabilitate a client’s image, not promote the disgusting aspect of it.

Guess with the economy being the way it is, a job is a job, heh?

  5. Looks like her kid’s dad doesn’t want them around Drew.

    ***
Tony Yauk, the father of Raines’ two children, said he’s fearful that his children will end up with Peterson as a step-father.

Yauk: “I don’t understand why she really would want to be with this person…I don’t want my kids around this guy…I mean, he’s crazy.”

    Quote of the day:

“Armstrong says, “[Peterson] actually said, ‘I will look after her and respect her the same as I have all my wives.”

    **********

That sure says a lot. Respect. All my wives.

    All in the same sentence.

  8. If you guys recall, A “Kim” Raines was outed in September at Ashley’s site (same address as Ernest Raines). She responded as “Wrong Person”.

What do you guys think? Is this Christina and was she just scared and lying…hoping that since her first name was incorrect that she could claim it wasn’t her? Or…

“…you have the wrong person. I am not sleeping with Drew or ever will slep with him…”

“I have stopped there to drop a friend off that is all…”

“Everyone has a mind of there own if she wants to hang with him that is on her but I did nothing wrong why am I being punished why is my family being punished…”

“And not to offend older men but that is just not a turn on for me sorry but it is not and to think about sleeping with an older man turns my skin”

“And for the record I will never being going over there ever again I just need to get this stuff off [your web site] so my kids and I will be safe”

“Fine dont beleive me but I am telling the truth I have done nothing with him yes I dropped her off a couple of times but she also uses my car.”

“I did not even do what he is saying I am doing I have never slept with him or will. Just got out of a bad relationship and is just focusing on me and my kid trying to get back on our feet and this happens. I am a good person and a good mom I do not deserve this.”

“like I have been saying I am not dating Drew Peterson so back the XXXX OFF of me. I am not dating him nor ever will I date him.”

  9. It’s like I said last night – this was all out there and known by many bloggers months ago. For Armstrong to insinuate that he broke an exclusive story is laughable. He reads the blogs to get his information like everyone else does. What’s even more laughable is for Selig and Brodsky to “confirm” this baloney, as though they’re endorsing it.

  10. Thinkaboutit

I hope that the engagement doesn’t mean that she is expecting like it did when Drew and Stacy got engaged.

    * * * * * *

Crikey. I hadn’t thought of that. How utterly depressing.

  11. Mum appears to be the word about everything surrounding the discovery of Caylee’s remains, what was found, and the specifics of the skull. All they’re admitting to is that the remains are Caylee.

  12. I boggles the mind that her remains were located in August by the meter reader and then still sat there until December.

It just confirms for me how very hard it is to locate remains…even when they are two blocks away from home…even when they’ve been seen and tips have been called in to the authorities.

    Bless us all.

  13. You know what is the saddest for me about all of this. With all of the known information of the events leading up to the admission of Casey that she “lost” Caylee to another, the wolves are going to be let out of the cages to find every which way to get the baby’s mom off on technicalities of the law, rather than finding her to be responsible for this horrible murder. I hope they won’t be successful for obvious reasons, but it’s scary to think it’s possible.

  14. I always have to remind my self that the defense has a job to do, and if my son was charged with a crime of which he was innocent, I would want the defense to do whatever it took to get him acquitted.

In this case, and in Drew’s when someone appears so clearly to be guilty (in the eyes of the public) it is hard to accept that they deserve to be defended just as vigorously, but the truth is that innocent people are sometimes charged and end up in prison, and even are executed. No one wants that blood on their hands.

  15. What gets me if I let myself think about it too much , is just that poor baby tossed out in a garbage bag…like so much trash.

    *sob*

  16. Tossed like garbage, only after her mother researched chloroform, neck breaking, borrowed a shovel, drove around with a rotting body smell in her trunk, partied heartily, implicated a woman who doesn’t appear to exist, claimed to have a nanny that no one ever met, and waited a month to admit her child was missing, only after her child’s grandmother acted rationally and accused her of something and called the cops. It’s hard to get past all of that. But, yeah, I guess that’s why even the guilty need lawyers to save their butts in such situations, so they don’t rot the rest of their pathetic lives in jail.

  17. Facs –
Re: the defense having a job to do… I think you’re absolutely right. Although certain defense attorneys are really scum-like, it can also be a noble calling. That’s not the case for all the ACTUAL scum that attaches itself to high profile cases in hopes of TV appearances, a book, or even – The Ultimate Goal – atheir own TV show. It was around before, I know, but ever since the OJ trial made so many media careers, it’s just gotten awful.

And, if DP is going to follow me while I’m on vacation, I’m SO glad that all you are along too!

  18. Hang Drew has posted conversations between Drew and another woman, for those who are interested.

I thought this one was priceless. It’s like he’s hiring a maid!:

“Drew Peterson (11/25/2008 7:00:52 PM): I am sincere but I am looking for some help with the house and kids and you seem to be what I’m looking for in a relationship so if we can work something out great if not we made a good friend in each other”

  19. Apparently, the only ones that haven’t figured out that Peterson is a lunatic, a nut job, are his three hired guns. Well, four, if you count Abood. Brodsky, Selig and Armstrong!

  20. I thought we need some good news!

Horses saved before snow causes roof collapse
    December 19, 2008 at 2:50 PM

Gurnee firefighters evacuated 50 horses from a barn before a foot of snow caused the roof on the structure to cave in a few hours later.

Lt. John Skillman said stable hands at Dianne Eppers Stables on U.S. Highway 45 near Lake Villa helped load the horses into trailers shortly after 8 a.m., when the stable owner called the Fire Department for help after the roof started to sag under the weight of the snow.

“We came out and agreed it was going to collapse,” Skillman said.

By the time the roof caved in of the pole barn a few hours later, the horses had been safely transferred to Fields & Fences, a 190-stall facility located at Stearns School and Hunt Club Road in nearby Wadsworth.

“They’re doing great,” said Fields & Fences owner Anita Schadeck. “They’ve got food, and they’re eating and drinking. They think they’re at a horse show.”

Stillman said horse lovers in the area donated the trailers that were used to move the animals to their temporary digs.

“We’re a very tight community so when there’s an emergency, everyone helps out,” Schadeck said.

The rescued horses will be allowed to move back into their more familiar barn as soon as the roof can be repaired, Stillman said. The collapse did not damage the stalls inside the barn, he said.

And the women who continue to date him — online or off.

  22. As far as the stinky engagement and the presence of Chris Raines’s family members looking out for her, Drew still got under their guard as the “engagement” took place without any knowledge, consultation or involvement with her family whatsoever !

Do most people get engaged to be married without the family knowing who they are getting engaged to, or is this all part of new age dating ??

  23. Maybe it’s a “cop thing”…or just more of Drew’s “goofy antics”.

How long is going to turn to those two excuses for his abhorrent behavior?

Why doesn’t Drew hire a Mrs Doubtfire instead of looking at nubile and attractive 23 year olds ??

    ***************

Funny, he’s been known to have befriended other women who might not fall into the 23 year old category. Why aren’t they worthy of his affections? Why must they all be the 23 year old daughters of people that are his age?

What’s even scarier is that the chances of these 23 year olds outliving this 54 year old predator are slim to none.

  26. Anyone heard about a rumor that Mr. Raines is a jeweler at Marcolina’s – the place that Drew bought Stacy’s anniversary ring?

  27. What’s even scarier is that the chances of these 23 year olds outliving this 54 year old predator are slim to none.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

You know your marriage to Drew is in trouble when he moves a barrel of clorine next to the bed.

Other than that he is a lovely guy (!!)

  28. From the Trib this morning:

    Enough with this guy
    December 20, 2008
News item: Drew Peterson, who is still married to his missing wife Stacy, is now engaged to a 23-year-old Chicago-area woman, his publicist said.

We’ll leave it to the father of the bride to explain what’s wrong with the Big Picture here. Even if you missed that story, you know what he said.

We’re just sick of being reminded that Peterson has a publicist. You don’t have to be O.J. Simpson to recognize the value of a showboat defense attorney. But most murder suspects get along fine without a publicist.

If you’re keeping score at home, the bride-to-be would be Peterson’s fifth wife. Technically, he’s still married to Stacy, who was his fourth, but he’s exploring how to divorce her because nobody has seen her since October 2007. And besides, he was still married to his third wife, Kathleen Savio, when he got engaged to Stacy. Savio drowned in a bathtub at home, in what state police believed was an accident until Peterson’s next wife turned up missing. Now they say it was a homicide.

Like the next Mrs. Peterson, Stacy was 23.

Peterson, 54, complains bitterly about being hounded by reporters, but every time they leave him alone for five minutes he pulls another outrageous stunt.

A year ago, he asked the public to help pay his legal bills via a Web site, DefendDrew.com. PayPal accepted!

In January, he rang up Steve Dahl’s show on WJMK-FM to propose an on-air contest: Win A Date With Drew. It turns out chicks find the ex-cop-turned-murder-suspect thing irresistible, he reported. They wanted to buy him drinks, give him their phone numbers, offer a shoulder. “The ladies are coming back around,” he said.

Then there’s the book, “Drew Peterson Exposed,” in which Peterson lays out his side of the story for author Derek Armstrong. It was Armstrong who broke the news of Peterson’s engagement in a news release. Yes, a news release.

There’s no established protocol to govern the behavior of murder suspects, though most of them wisely keep a low profile. But Peterson revels in the attention. He’s the star in a riveting mystery unfolding not just in the local media but the tabloids, talk shows and Fox News, and if he didn’t love it, he wouldn’t invite it. There’s no such thing as bad publicity, the saying goes. But yes, there is.

Drew Peterson Fights State’s Attorney Appeal to Reinstate Gun Charges
In a cross appeal, attorneys representing Drew Peterson urge that police officer gun rights law be upheld and the Will County State’s Attorney’s appeal be denied.
    thepublicityagency.com – December 19, 2008

(PRNewsChannel) / Chicago, Ill. / In round three in the battle of gun charges against Drew Peterson, his attorneys today filed a cross appeal, to counter the Will County State’s Attorney Office and its effort to reinstate gun charges against their client.

“This was a vindictive prosecution from the beginning and all the State’s Attorney wants to do is to continue this effort even though the judge dismissed the weapons case on solid grounds,” says Andrew Abood, one of Peterson’s defense attorneys.

Peterson, the former law enforcement officer accused in the disappearance of his fourth wife Stacy and implicated in the death of his third wife, could go to jail of convicted on the gun charges.

Last week, the Will County State’s Attorney Office appealed the dismissal of gun charges against Peterson, according to court records.

And last month, a Will County judge dismissed all felony gun charges against former Bolingbrook Police Sgt. Drew Peterson after the prosecution refused to comply with the judge’s order to give the defense internal documents leading up to the charges against Peterson.

Peterson was arrested in May for allegedly possessing a modified assault rifle with a barrel of less than 16 inches. Authorities had seized the rifle while investigating disappearance of Peterson’s fourth wife, Stacy, who vanished Oct. 28, 2007.

Peterson lead defense attorney Joel Brodsky had questioned the timeline of how the gun case unfolded and demanded the prosecution hand over records. When they refused, Judge Richard Schoenstedt said he had no choice but to dismiss the case.

In the cross appeal Drew Peterson is asking the appellate court to uphold the Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act (LEOSA) and declare that under federal law a police officer can possess a rifle with a barrel length of less than 16 inches, despite a state law to the contrary. LEOSA is a federal law, and Peterson is asking the appellate court to hold that it trumps state law.

Peterson has not been charged with any crime relating to the disappearance of his wife Stacy or the death of his ex-wife Kathleen Savio whose death has been reclassified as a homicide.

“We are confident that the dismissal will be upheld and the appeal dismissed, but should prosecutors win their appeal, we’re equally confident that prosecutors will lose the case at trial,” says Joel Brodsky, Peterson’s lead criminal defense attorney.

Editor’s note: Joel Brodsky or Andrew Abood are available for interviews

  30. Hi ya Bucket. Thanks for the news.

I’m not getting this appeal thing. I am under the impression that the SA’s Office is appealing the Judge’s ruling to dismiss the case based on them not turning over broad discovery that the defense requested.

Why is Peterson’s defense putting out press releases that they’re appealing the charges, when it’s the Judge’s dismissal that’s the issue? They don’t seem to mention that argument in their press releases. Just the vindictive prosecution and lawful right to carry the weapon.

  31. I guess what I’m thinking is that since the case was never tried on the issues, why is the defense asking the Appellate Court to turn down reinstating the case based on those issues? They’re asking the Appellate Court to make a decision on the original charges, rather than the reason for the case being dismissed. I don’t understand how they can do that.

  32. I guess, Bucket. It’s very strange that not once has the dismissal due to the broad discovery issue been brought up in either press release. Strange.

But, they do say IF the case is reinstated, they’re confident they’ll prevail. Hmmmm. Makes me think they just might think the case will be reinstated.

  33. Rescue – If you think about it not in terms of criminal law, but the laws of public relations, it makes more sense to me. Mention of the broad discovery issue leads to mention of those pesky deceased and ‘missing’ wives of his… “vindictive prosecution,” on the other hand, makes him sound like a victim.

  34. “Editor’s note: Joel Brodsky or Andrew Abood are available for interviews”

    Well, DUH!

“Asked whether she discussed those issues with Brodsky, Odeh said, “Absolutely. I don’t think it’s appropriate. I think it is in the client’s best interest to keep it quiet and focus on the case. But he just says the case is going to make us famous and we’re all going to get book deals.

  35. That was a very nice editorial from the Trib. They are saying what we’ve been saying for a few months now. Why should a murder suspect need a publicist?

I did notice that the three comments took the Tribune to task for putting the freshly-affianced suspect on the front page any time his publicist sends out a new press release. They really have no cause to complain since it’s their decision to turn every release into a major story or not

Course, I don’t mind the coverage. How else would we follow the case in the media? We can only rely on Google sleuthing and Internet rumors so much.

  36. Drewpy Dewpy had a good life,
    Drewpy Dewpy lost his wife.
All the defense donkeys, And all the defense men
Couldn’t keep Drewpy out of the news again.

Thank the heavens that Drewpy, Brodsky and Selig are playing to the jury of his peers. It’s working! Not for them, of course, but for the majority of us, LOL.

  37. I still have a hard time believing this engagement thing is real, or maybe I’m just too far in denial to accept the possibility that anyone could want to be with him at this point.

Seems like just a publicity stunt or some other shady thing. Blago was getting all the attention. And besides, his days of freedom are numbered. Gotta enjoy all the press attention while he can.

  38. The cross-appeal mentions production of documents for a “selective” prosecution defense. That’s interesting because I could swear that at the last hearing, the judge threw out that defense completely but agreed to hear defense on the ground of “vindictive” prosecution. But maybe I remember wrong.

And yeah, I see that they are also appealling the old July denial to dismiss citing the LEOSA (which I don’t think will fly this time either).

They really are hoping just to make it all go away, I guess.

  39. Song4sky – yes, I admit that Drew Peterson appealing to a young woman such as Ms. Raines is unbelievable, but knowledge of her being in his life was outted on another blog months ago. Also, there’s a blogger named Exlaw who posted on another board that Peterson was involved with someone, and was going to get a divorce, move away and get married. You know, move on with his life.

It’s just that it takes Armstrong a little longer than the rest of us to get this news out, yet, he claims it’s news that’s his exclusively.

Isn’t that how it goes? LMAO.

  40. Drew, Joel, Selig, the girl’s dad, the girls ex-boyfriend, anonymous co-workers, garden ninjas, and self-described correspondents all attesting to the relationship/engagement.

I don’t doubt it’s true. But I’ll bet the marriage never happens. This girl is so terrified she won’t even admit to dating Drew, much less being engaged to him. I’m betting the relationship is headed for a rocky shore just about now…

  41. Laughing all the way…..

If this was a publicity stunt, I assume Peterson & Company want the jury pool to think he’s a complete lunatic, because there’s nothing about this news that endears him to anyone. Not his family (I hope they have enough common sense to see this), his “friends,” his children, his associates, the parents of his girlfriends, the public, the media, and, most of all, his jury pool. I’m sure the prospect of a future juror that has raised, and may even have a daughter, would be taking a big chance. If there’s a future arrest, better keep anyone off the jury that has a daughter. Stick with the ones that think he’s a hot 54 year old that oozes charisma and thinks riDDing young women like broncos is a special trait they happen to like in a man.

  42. Nope, didn’t work. Still in denial! Okay, I’m sure a relationship of some sort exists for whatever messed up reason, but it’s still a publicity stunt to get his ugly mug back in the news, i.e., it wasn’t a “leak”. I guess that’s what the shady PR people are for. Well, now I’m just stating the obvious, sorry about that! Carry on!

I guess it just bugs me how much attention this is getting since that is just what suspect wants, even tho I’m just as guilty!

  43. I thought the purpose of a PR agent is to spread glowing good publicity about a media-damaged client. How come a PR agent would continue to represent a client, and continue to issue press releases that promote his icky, creepy side, like schmoozing with yet another 23 year old?

I’ve heard of other PR agents walking away from clients who act against their advice. What’s up with this Selig guy?

  44. “If this was a publicity stunt, I assume Peterson & Company want the jury pool to think he’s a complete lunatic, because there’s nothing about this news that endears him to anyone”

    ********************

Nothing about his publicity has been endearing, or in any way helpful to his cases.

  45. Yeah, Facs, I’m wondering myself how this latest “publicity stunt” is supposed to help Peterson, except to convince the fence-sitters that he’s out of his mind. You know, the insanity defense.

  46. Of course, I suppose convincing the neighbors to go in his ex-wife’s house to find her dead in a dry bath tub, and losing his current wife days after she made unflattering statements about him, could make some think he’s a mad man, but, hey, that’s just my opinion.

  47. I ask because “there’s no such thing as bad publicity” only for celebrities and those whose work rely on being in the public’s eye. Drew has a lot to lose if his jury pool is weighted against him.

When Drew’s team has put together media packages in the past they’ve been along the lines of the “Mr. Mom” video and interview where Glenn tried to communicate the softer-gentler side of Drew as a family man. This is not along those lines.

There’s really no benefit for Drew in exposing his latest romantic interest. I think it’s very revelaing that the “news release” came directly from the opportunist Armstrong rather than being a Selig Media release. They only issued a release in response to the story that had already hit the news, and they have declined interviews beyond the inital statements.

  48. “Song4sky, what do you think the suspect and his defense team expect to gain from being in the news?”

    **********************

Well that’s the million dollar question. It’s been very damning all along, yet they continue to do it. Anyone outside of that team knows it’s a very bad idea. The suspect should lay low and stay the heck out of the media. But that’s not what DP & Co. is about. I guess it’s about the fame, center of attention, no press is bad press mentality. Who knows?

  49. Yeah, it’s all about the fame for Peterson, but isn’t a publicity agent supposed to spread good news about a client, or help rehabilitate one, if necessary? What is good news about following up a book author’s revelation that a 54 year old homicide suspect is engaged to a 23 year old woman, when he’s still legally married and his wife is suspected of being dead at his hands?

    Is Selig a friggin idiot?

  50. Glenn Selig responded to Mark Czerniec on his blog. Czerniec does news research for Steve Dahl:

Glenn Selig, Drew Petersen’s publicist, sent this message last night:

Read your post… and just for the record, we are not the ones who released this information. I confirmed it only after Derek Armstrong reported it. I was bombarded with phone calls from all sorts of media outlets, fielding phone calls today on average of every three minutes. And I’m not exaggerating.

Drew Peterson spoke with Mr. Armstrong but apparently did not anticipate Mr. Armstrong making the information public.

You’ll notice that despite what people say about Drew wanting the spotlight, we have declined all interview invitations at this time.

  51. Yeah, profit, is the logical reason.

It’s just that it defies logic that a defense attorney and a PR agent would continue to represent someone who does everything but what they tell him to do. Stay quiet, avoid controversy. Guess they took the same medicine Kim Matuska and Christina Raines took to get past the insaneness of Drew Peterson.

  52. I know Brodsky keeps insisting that there’s not going to be any charges in the Savio/Peterson cases, but I wonder why he’s not anticipating the obvious. How is Peterson going to get past the fact that Kathleen’s Will is now suspected of being fraudulent, and has been investigated by the GJ? Insurance companies are notorious for going after fraudulent payouts, so I see that coming soon.

There’s a witness to the original Will of Kathleen’s and Drew’s, his former police partner, that is no longer on good terms with Peterson. Now, how did that happen when they were friends up until the time Stacy went missing? He was called before the GJ investing Kathleen’s death and Stacy’s disappearance, and has publicly stated that he wants nothing to do with Peterson. What caused the rift and what is going to come of that?

If there’s any chance the insurance companies think they’ve been defrauded, then they certainly have been investigating it, and they’ll pursue it until he’s squeezed dry. Insurance companies have legal departments, and there’s absolutely no reason for them not to have become involved now in this whole mess.

I think he is going to have his hands full with the Kathleen Savio probate estate. It will drain him financially, and he’ll find himself in a legal quandary. I have no doubt about that.

  53. You’re top man on the scene
You don’t think life comes in between
    But hey, she’s just seventeen
She feels that she’s a worldly girl
But man you’ve been around the world
She is just some worried daddy’s girl
Even though there’s nothing I can say
To cheat you and nature any way

    Let her down easy
Her heart is on a dime
    Let her down easy
And you’ll grow up in time

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++

YES, YES and YES to all the above.

He should be extremely worried about the Insurance frauds he committed and the dicky will he conveniently “found”.

At least Brodsky can give him some expert advice in that field (!!)

  55. Peterson has lawyers and so do the insurance companies that paid out on Kathleen after her death.

In the course of the period that forms were filled out, claims filed, and monies paid, I am sure the US Postal Service was involved.

    Umm, mail fraud?

  56. I know Drew Peterson has lawyers.

He has one lawyer in particular with experience in defrauding dead people.

His expertise in that field may be what’s attracted Drew to him in the first place.

  57. BTW – Fox News is reporting that the police are back at the parents’ house of Casey Anthony, and have executed another search warrant and are again carrying out bags of things taken from there.

  58. Drew’s motive for killing either of his last wives is greed. I’d love to see him go down for fraud if he can’t be snagged for murder.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Maybe he’ll go down for both and a few other things as well (!)

My guess is we don’t know half of what LE is investigating.

State Attorney has candidly said the investigation has been “highly productive”

    That sounds pretty encouraging.

  60. Well, then, how can Brodsky be so sure his client is not guilty of some sort of fraud involved with Kathleen’s death? Even if one were to turn a blind eye to the fact that Peterson was the one who killed her, the probate estate and documents involved are a whole ‘nother thing. Brodsky has NO way of knowing if Peterson did something fraudulently. Merely his word. If he wants to hang his hat on Peterson’s word, that’s his business, but, short of that, he had absolutely no first hand knowledge that his client is not involved in fraud. That’s a fact. She died, he found a Will that her divorce attorney said she didn’t have when questioned during divorce proceedings, and he was the generous beneficiary of all of her assets. It’s quite simple, actually.

  61. Ya just can’t make this stuff up, LOL.

This is straight out of the Illinois Notary Handbook published by the Illinois Secretary of State:

While continuing to assert that he had nothing to do with the death of one wife and the disappearance of another, Drew Peterson said he’s mentally prepared to be charged and put on trial in connection with one or both cases. “I’m prepared for anything,” Peterson told TODAY’s Matt Lauer in an exclusive interview….

I enjoy going back and reading his statements. It’s encouraging to know that he wasn’t so convinced he was getting away with anything. He’s mental alright.

  65. Boyfriend: No Peterson engagement
    December 20, 2008 at 6:25 PM

The woman Drew Peterson claims to be engaged to has a live-in boyfriend and no intention of marrying the former Bolingbrook police sergeant, the boyfriend and her father said today.

On Wednesday, Peterson’s publicist issued a statement saying that he was engaged. The woman’s family confirmed that Peterson had given a ring to Christina Raines, 23, a Romeoville waitress with two young kids.

She could not be reached for comment, but reportedly denied last week that she is engaged.

“She never said, ‘Yes, I will marry you,'” said Raines’ boyfriend, Mike, who declined to give his full name. He said he and Raines have dated for two years, have lived together for more than a year and both work at a Bolingbrook restaurant.

Chicago resident Ernie Raines responds to news that his daughter Christina is engaged to Drew Peterson.

The Raines family are casual acquaintances with Peterson, who frequented the restaurant where Christina Raines works.

The boyfriend said Raines and Peterson have been casually hanging out in recent months, despite his insistence that she stay away from Peterson. He said the engagement announcement by Peterson is revenge for her rebuffing his advances.

“He’s [mad] at her and he’s trying to get back at her by dragging her name through the mud,” Mike said.

He said that Christina hasn’t seen or spoken to Peterson in more than a week.

Peterson, who declined to reveal his fiancé’s identity, maintained his weeklong silence on Saturday.

Peterson’s fourth wife, Stacy, was 23 when she vanished in October 2007. The death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio, whose body was found in a dry bathtub, has since been reclassified a homicide. Peterson hasn’t been charged in either case. Peterson contends that Stacy ran away and that he is trying to file for divorce from her.

Ernie Raines said his daughter is naive and vulnerable and didn’t want to cause a confrontation when Peterson, 54 and still married, slipped a ring onto her finger more than a week ago.

Raines said that Peterson was “dating” his daughter for four months, but that it wasn’t serious. He said Peterson tricked his daughter into an engagement.

“He put the ring on her finger,” Ernie Raines said. “He said ‘we’re going to get married and get a house’ … He said he’ll probably go to jail for a couple days, but will probably be bonded out … (But) she never said she was going to marry him. This is in his head.

“She told me, ‘I love Mike. I want to be with Mike,'” said Ernie Raines, who is schedule to appear on the CBS Early Show on Monday.

Joey Raines, Christina Raines’ half brother, said Saturday that he fears that she may be confused about what she wants. He said that she’s become evasive.

“She’s telling me that it’s not true,” said Raines, of southwest suburban Worth. “(But) I overheard [family members] talking about the ring supposedly that Drew got her. … She’s probably telling us one thing and telling him another.”

Ernie Raines said he and his daughter met Drew and Stacy Peterson at a Bolingbrook laundromat in 2003. He said he told a then-17-year-old Stacy that it was nice that she was doing her father’s laundry, but in fact the clothes belonged to Drew.

  67. I guess that explains why she’s been so vehemently denying everything. She has a boyfriend.

I’m sorry but what a freakin’ idiot that girl must be.

  68. You mean Selig confirmed a false statement. Oh, but wait, that was only after Armstrong broke the exclusive news, and Selig and Brodsky confirmed it.

Can’t someone with any decency and an ounce of brains (STEPHEN PETERSON) get those poor kids out of that maniac’s house once and for all, on the grounds that the man is a certified lunatic?

  78. “… He said he’ll probably go to jail for a couple days, but will probably be bonded out … (But) she never said she was going to marry him. This is in his head.”

Well, good, I’m glad to know Peterson expects to go to jail. Guess he knows more than we think he does.

  79. From the comment section of the Chicago Tribune news article Facs posted:

JOE Raines on December 20, 2008 7:25 PM

What is troubling to me as the oldest in the family and Chrissy’s uncle, is no one gets tricked into a relationship when marriage is concerned. Next, Drew dates young women and he probably likes a young women because he feels he can control her with money a car a house and a cell phone. As her uncle I would hope she does not marry this guy, but she is an adult, and will do whatever she wants to do. I would like to tell her I support her whatever she decides. The only good thing is with this out in the open there is probably little chance he does anything to her, but one can only hope! The picture they are showing of my niece is not Chrissy its her sister my other niece!

What would that be for or does he think he will go to jail for “a couple of days” for killing Kathleen and Stacy ??

  81. JAH – I assume he knows he’s going to be arrested, but expects to bond out within a couple of days once the money is raised to do so.

  82. Another family comment from an earlier article – I believe this is her half-brother, as mentioned in the above article:

Joseph Raines Jr. on December 18, 2008 11:40 PM

My sister needs to get far away from him he is no good he needs to find someone his own age to charm instead of young naive women. He shouldn’t even have a chance to be talking to women he should be in jail, I don’t want my sister to be the 3rd missing or dead. Back off Drew she has a whole life ahead of her and 2 kids that need and love her. Her family and friends are here for her.

  83. I already know what the outcome is going to be if this “engagement” is going to be ended somehow.

    Drew will blame the Media.

Next he will say he ended the relationship and start badmouthing his ex-fiance.

He will say she persued him, insisted on getting engaged and only wanted to be with him for what he could give her.

I don’t even need a crystal ball as Drew is so utterly predictable in his MO !

  84. So..could this be a tale of two sisters…one cheating on her boyfriend with Drew while the other covers for her?

    I am so confused.

  85. Another comment from the half-brother, Joe Jr.:

joer raines Jr on December 20, 2008 8:10 PM

“Like my dad said, I would hope my sister knows what she is doing, and I would like to say that I do not condone this! I know my sister had this ring and she told me they were just friends but I do not buy it. I know she is a little scared, and naive, but she is a good kid trying to raise two kids. Whatever she does is her business but she needs to know we are here to protect her if need be!”

  86. We’ve got Joe in Minnesota, Joe, Jr. in Worth, Kim Raines, Christina “Chrissy” Raines and Ernie Raines.

Got all that? A scorecard would be good.

Armie says the current fiancee wrote letters of admiration to Drew. The father, Ernie, says he and his daughter met Drew and Stacy in a laundromat. Then, someone said Drew frequented the restaurant where she worked. Christina Raines ex-fiancee said it wasn’t true, she wasn’t engaged to Drew. Then he said she was. She said she wasn’t, but her father said she was. Now they all say she isn’t.

    I have a headache too.

  87. Here’s Armstrong’s original press release again. This was sent to and posted by Greta on her blog. Straight from the horse’s mouth to the donkey’s mouth:

    From:
    To: Howard, Cory
    Sent: Wed Dec 17 08:44:23 2008
Subject: RELEASE—Drew Peterson Engaged to 23-Year Old

Drew Peterson, Suspected in Disappearance of Wife, Engaged to 23-Year Old
Peterson confirms he will file for divorce from missing wife and marry fiancé.
    Correspondent Derek Armstrong

Drew Peterson confirmed he proposed to a much younger woman today, even as his wife is missing and he’s under scrutiny in the death of his third wife.
The engagement continues his pattern of courting women less than half his age and proposing while still married.
Peterson confirmed that the woman has accepted, despite the fact he’s a suspect in the death of his third wife Kathleen Savio and implicated in the disappearance of his fourth wife Stacy—to whom he is still married.
“Yes, we’ve been dating four months,” he said. Peterson also admitted to rumors that he has dated various women in the last few months since Stacy disappeared October 28, 2007. That remains an open case and under investigation by the Illinois State Police and the Will County State’s Attorney Office.
Speaking exclusively to this reporter, Peterson described his fiancé as beautiful, but refused to disclose her identity. “The media will do its best to break us up and confront her if they know her name,” he said in an interview today.
When asked how his four children felt about his new fiancé, Peterson answered, “Both the kids and I need a woman in our lives.” When asked how the family of his fiancé felt, he replied “No comment.”
No date has been set for a marriage, according to Peterson.
Still technically married, Peterson says he will file for a divorce on the basis of “abandonment,” a move that angers Stacy’s family and many people following the case.
This reporter pursued the possibility of a new romantic fling after breaking the story of Peterson’s intention to divorce. The divorce story evolved out of an interview with Peterson for the book Drew Peterson Exposed.
In the interview, as reported in the book Drew Peterson Exposed, Peterson said, “I like the girls. I like my beer. I like to party. I like to be the clown. And I will get married again.”
A source indicated Peterson proposed to his new romantic interest, later confirmed by Peterson himself and by his publicist Glenn Selig.
When he proposed to Stacy, Peterson was still married to Kathleen Savio. Stacy was also half his age and-at 17-underage. Kathleen Savio was found dead not long afterwards.
When Peterson proposed to Savio, he was still married to Victoria Connolly. Victoria is still very much alive, although in media interviews she did complain of a “controlling Drew.”
When how he thought the media and public would take the news Peterson said, “Who cares? This is my life. I’m entitled to be happy.”

  88. We have a girl right now on the line who says she is Christina’s cousin. This is Jenny?

    Yes it is.

    So, you’re her cousin.

    Yes I am.

How is this affecting your family?

I, y’know, I don’t know about the other half. I know her dad’s probably not happy. I’m not happy at all and I can’t believe that any of myfamily would be supportive of this at all.

Are you on good terms with her?

Yeah. Last I talked to her we were. I mean our kids play together. We used to live together at my dad’s house.

Now what have you said to her?

I haven’t been able to get ahold of her so I haven’t said anything to her but if I could I’d like to tell her to rethink what she’s doing. She’s a young beautiful girl and she’s so smart and she’s got two kids of her own and I would hate to see anything happen to her that happened to these other women.

What’s her track record with guys? Is she into like bad dudes? Is this how it’s working?

yeah, from what I’ve noticed it’s kind of the bad dude, the bad guy…

Would anyway do you think she’d be looking at Drew Peterson as like a dude to help step in with the two kids? Could that be a factor?

She, y’know, she was with somebody she was living with and I guess he was helping with the kids so I don’t know if that’s even a factor. I mean, she’s a hard worker, and she’s always had money and stuff so I don’t understand what is going through her head.

Is she a girl who is just into fame?

That could be a part of it too. I have no idea. I don’t know what is going through her head. I just wish she would just get out of it.

You and the rest of the family are completely opposed to this?

Yeah, me and my father think it’s just absolutely ridiculous. We think it’s just some stupid thing that she’s thought up this time and hope that she doesn’t do it now.

What advice would you say to her right now?

I would tell her to get out and leave that boy – leave that guy – alone. She’s been messing with him for years…and just leave it alone and find someone her own age. Find someone who will love her and stop trying to find someone to just take care of her and just get out of it. I don’t want to see my cousin in the paper saying that she’s missing and the kids have no mom. I think that would be really really sad and they’re awesome kids.

  89. When asked how his four children felt about his new fiancé, Peterson answered, “Both the kids and I need a woman in our lives.”

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I bet 3 year old Lacey has told Drew he needed a woman in his life and supports his engagement.

Oh but wait weren’t these children irrepairably psychologically damaged by the departure of Lenny and paula but they’re bored by their mother being missing?

  90. JAH – Yes, according to Brodsky, the children were psychologically damaged by law enforcement using and allowing Len & Paula to befriend the children while wiretapping, and then walk out of their lives. But that is only after the plant and poster people damaged them first.

See, Drew has nothing to do with any of it, and the children losing their moms is all relative.

  91. A comment from the Q101 blog:

“Christina Raines is a typical white trash ho. She has 2 kids by some stoner piece of shit that was actually ARRESTED by Drew! She has a suspended drivers license because she doesnt like to pay for insurance for her car…

Could this explain the confusion about Kim Raines who swore up and down that she was not involved with Drew but was only “delivering the goods” to Drew’s house?

“Everyone has a mind of there own if she wants to hang with him that is on her but I did nothing wrong why am I being punished why is my family being punished…”

“Fine dont beleive me but I am telling the truth I have done nothing with him yes I dropped her off a couple of times but she also uses my car.

And possibly a driver’s license? (just throwing it out there)

  92. This is the updated story from the Chicago Tribune, where Peterson insists he IS engaged.

Drew Peterson insists he’s engaged to 23-year-old waitress
Romeoville woman’s father, alleged boyfriend disagree

By Mary Owen and Erika Slife | Tribune Reporters
    December 21, 2008

Drew Peterson insisted on Saturday that he and a 23-year-old Romeoville waitress were engaged, breaking a weeklong silence on the subject.

    But her family—and her live-in boyfriend—say he’s dreaming.

The supposed fiance, Christina Raines, lives with a man who said the engagement announcement by Peterson is revenge for her rebuffing his advances.

“He’s [mad] at her and he’s trying to get back at her by dragging her name through the mud,” said Mike, who identified himself as Raines’ boyfriend but declined to give his full name.

But Peterson, 54, insisted that his fiance ended things with Mike, who Peterson said “is going loony over this,” and that they are living together because of the lease. Peterson said he had nothing to do with the breakup.

Raines, a mother of two young children, could not be reached for comment.

Peterson’s fourth wife, Stacy, was 23 when she vanished in October 2007. The death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio, whose body was found in an empty bathtub, has since been reclassified a homicide. Peterson has not been charged in either case. Peterson contends that Stacy ran away and that he’s been trying to divorce her.

The newest drama involving the former Bolingbrook police sergeant began Wednesday when his publicist issued a statement confirming he was engaged.

Raines reportedly denied she is engaged, but her family said Peterson had given her a ring.

“She never said, ‘Yes, I will marry you,’ ” said Mike, who said he and Raines have dated for two years and have lived together for more than a year. He and Raines both work at a Bolingbrook restaurant frequented by Peterson.

Raines’ family members are acquaintances with Peterson.

Mike said Raines and Peterson have been casually hanging out in recent months, but were not dating. He said he has told her to stay away from him. Peterson said they were dating and that things were going well until it became public.

“It was a nice relationship,” Peterson said. “We both got kids, we got along together. Now we’ve got the world trying to break us up.”

Ernie Raines said his daughter is naive and vulnerable. He said that Peterson and his daughter have been dating for four months, but that it was not serious. He said Peterson tricked his daughter into an engagement.

“He put the ring on her finger,” Raines said. “He said, ‘We’re going to get married and get a house.’ . . . He said he’ll probably go to jail for a couple of days, but will probably be bonded out . . . She never said she was going to marry him. This is in his head.

“She told me, ‘I love Mike. I want to be with Mike,’ ” said Raines, who is scheduled to appear Monday on CBS’ “The Early Show.”

Joey Raines, Christina Raines’ half-brother, said Saturday he fears she’s confused on what she wants. He said she’s become evasive.

“She’s telling me that it’s not true,” said Raines of southwest suburban Worth. “I overheard [family members] talking about the ring supposedly that Drew got her. . . . She’s probably telling us one thing and telling him another.”

Ernie Raines said he and his daughter met Drew and Stacy Peterson at a Bolingbrook coin-op laundry in 2003. He said that he told a then-17-year-old Stacy it was nice that she was doing her father’s laundry, but that in fact the clothes belonged to Drew.

    Huh.

I’m wondering if there’s going to be a press release by Peterson’s attorney saying that his children have been psychologically damaged by this woman being in his life, but now kept away by her family, hmmm?

  95. I suppose time will tell where all this nonsense will be heading, but meanwhile Drew is still a murder suspect and under investigation, which is what matters most.

Peterson spotted at Downers Grove club
    December 21, 2008 at 9:08 PM

In the latest chapter of the is-he-or-isn’t-he saga known as Drew Peterson’s engagement, the former Bolingbrook police sergeant and a woman he identified as his fiance were spotted Saturday night at a dance club in Downers Grove.

“Is this your new fiance?” an off-camera voice asks in a clip shot by a freelance videographer.

“Yes sir,” Peterson replies, laughing and kissing the head of the woman with him.

“No!” she says. “No, it’s not. I’m sorry.”

Interviewed tonight, the woman confirmed that she was at the club with Peterson and appears in the video. But she is not in a romantic relationship with Peterson, she insisted.

Nor is she Christina Raines, the 23-year-old Romeoville waitress Peterson has said is his fiance….
