Drew Peterson transferred to federal facility in Indiana

Drew Peterson, AKA No. 07018-748

UPDATE 3/10/17: The Chicago Tribune has unearthed the official reason for Peterson’s transfer. “Offender Peterson is a threat to safety and security of the department and therefore an Interstate Corrections Compact Agreement transfer is being initiated by IDOC,” the agency’s acting manager, Doug Stephens, wrote in a letter to the agency’s director.

On Tuesday, and with no public explanation, Drew Peterson was transferred from the Menard Correctional Center in Chester to the Terre Haute Federal Correctional Institution in Indiana.

His attorney, Steve Greenberg, stated that he has been given no explanation for why Peterson was transferred but pointed out that the facility would most likely be more comfortable and safer for Peterson.

He is still technically in IDOC custody.

Yesterday, the case file for Peterson’s latest murder-for-hire conviction was updated with a full history:

Ex-cop wife killer Drew Peterson attacked in prison by inmate with food tray who reportedly wanted to steal items to sell on eBay
    BY DAVID BOROFF
    NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
    Wednesday, April 12, 2017, 12:52 PM
The former Illinois police officer convicted of killing his wife was attacked in an Indiana prison by a tray-wielding inmate who wanted to sell some of the murderer’s belongings on eBay, according to a report.
Drew Peterson, serving time for the slaying of Kathleen Savio and for trying to arrange a hit on the prosecutor, was not seriously injured in the attempted assault at the Terre Haute federal prison.
A source told WBBM’s Steve Miller that the inmate wanted to sneak some of Peterson’s belongings out of the prison in order to have his family sell off the items online.

Peterson was “jumped” by the other inmate on March 29 in the dining area, according to the Chicago Tribune. He has been in insolation for his own protection since the attack, according to the newspaper.
His lawyer Steven Greenberg told the Tribune that he is “looking into the matter.”
Peterson has only been at the Terre Haute facility a short time. He was transferred earlier this year from the Menard Correctional Center in Illinois after officials believed he posted a security threat.
“Offender Peterson is a threat to safety and security of the department and therefore an Interstate Corrections Compact Agreement transfer is being initiated by IDOC,” Doug Stephens of the Illinois Department of Corrections wrote in a letter obtained by the Tribune.
“With his placement outside of Illinois Department of Corrections, it is imperative this offender be continually monitored through his mail as well as telephone conversations due to his former actions.”

The 63-year-old Peterson was originally sentenced to 38 years in prison in 2013 for the murder of third wife Savio.
Savio was found dead in her bathtub in 2004, and her death was originally ruled an accident. However, the case was reopened after fourth wife Stacy Peterson disappeared in 2007.
The former Bolingbrook, Ill., police officer was sentenced to an additional 40 years last year for trying to have prosecutor James Glasgow killed.
“This was not merely a threat to one prosecutor,” Glasgow said at the time. “It was an attack on our entire criminal justice system by a notorious murderer who always felt he could act outside and above the law.”

  2. “The Peterson case . . .

    Food fight?

    Or entrepreneurship, prison style?

Having survived an attack in March by a fellow inmate armed with a food tray, convicted murderer Drew Peterson is alive and well enough to dispatch a birthday card recently to his attorney, Steven Greenberg.

So what prompted someone to attack Peterson, who is in federal prison in Terre Haute, Ind., with a tray?

“I’m told [Drew] got hit in the head by a food tray in an attempt to get him taken out of his cell long enough for his cellmate to swipe stuff from him he wanted to sell on eBay,” Greenberg said.

    • Upshot: Peterson is housed in a segregated prison unit away from the general population since he was attacked on March 29, but not seriously hurt.

“Look,” said Greenberg. “I’m not holding his hand. I’m just waiting for the Illinois Supreme Court to rule on his case.”
Peterson is serving 78 years for murder and a murder-for-hire scheme and eligible for parole in 2081.

Whatever, Peterson’s birthday greeting to Greenberg was warm. It stated: “Just a quick note wishing you a happy birthday. Wow. 57. Hope all is well with you and your family.” [Greenberg’s birthday was May 4.]

    • Added Greenberg: “I bet Peterson gets out before [former Illinois Gov. Rod] Blagojevich does.””

  3. “SNEED: Peterson attorney says Drew getting hernia surgery, misses kids
    CHICAGO NEWS 08/19/2017, 09:16am

    The Peterson file . . .

Convicted wife murderer Drew Peterson misses his family.

And he’s having a hernia operation in a few weeks.

    Let’s rebake this cake.

“Put it this way,” said Steve Greenberg, Peterson’s attorney, who tells Sneed he talked to his client two days ago. “Peterson hasn’t seen his kids in years, now finds it very difficult to stay in contact with his family, continues to maintain his innocence, wants to get out of jail and told me he is having hernia surgery soon.”

The subject of numerous TV specials airing this year, Peterson, the once-affable former Bolingbrook cop, is now back on the celeb crime radar big time.

“Look. It’s coming up on 10 years since the death of (Kathleen) Savio (Peterson’s third wife) and the disappearance of Stacy (Peterson’s still-missing fourth wife). That’s a long time to be in prison if you believe you are innocent, ” said Greenberg.

“I presume it’s also been difficult since his son Stephen (who had been the caretaker of Peterson’s youngest children) went public on TV earlier this year stating he believed his father probably killed Savio and told the press he had come to believe his father also killed Stacy,” said Greenberg.
The father of six children by three of his wives, Peterson had relied on Stephen to take care of his family on his police pension fund, which has since been taken away.

“He cared for his kids, no matter what else was said,” Greenberg said. “And Drew believes the southern Illinois case (an attempt to order a hit on Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow, which netted him a 40-year sentence) was a set-up.”

Peterson is also serving a 38-year prison sentence for the 2004 bathtub murder of Savio — and is now being held in federal custody in Terre Haute, Ind., for being “a threat to safety.”

“He (Peterson) tells me he likes the federal pen better than the state (Menard Correctional Center), where he had been held — and which he claims is unfit for humans,” Greenberg said.

“The reason we were in touch recently is because he’s wondering why it’s taking so long for the Illinois Supreme Court to rule on his appeal,” said Greenberg. “I told him I was taking it as a positive sign.”

Greenberg is also being interviewed by former O.J. Simpson prosecutor Marcia Clark on Monday for “The First 48,” a show on the Investigation Discovery channel.

    Stay tuned.”
